Kitchen Color Trends: Unveiling the Hottest Shades for a Stylish Reno

Written by Swedish Door | April 27, 2022

Kitchen colours can change the mood of the heart of your home. Dark colours can downplay a large kitchen window, while neutral tones allow you to play with all kinds of hues. Bright colours not only make food prep easier (because you can see better), but they can also make your mood more cheerful.

And of course, you should go with colours that you like. No one is saying you shouldn’t have an orange, pink, or purple kitchen if you’re that adamant about any of those three colours.

If you want some ideas for what’s trending in kitchen cabinet colours, we’ve got a few suggestions for you when considering popular kitchen colours for painted cabinets.

Green

It’s so easy bein’ green!

Green is a huge colour, and designers are combining warm shades of green with wood cabinet textures like oak and walnut.

Green goes with blue, orange, purple, and brown. The obvious choice here is to have brown, such as a natural wood on your countertops, to complement the green of your cabinets and to have other earthy tones. However, don’t be afraid to contrast with white or even grey.

Keep in mind you can also add splashes of colour to your kitchen with countertop appliances, a backsplash, wall paint, wallpaper, and your decor.

Matte Grey

Matte grey is a darker shade of grey popular among kitchen designers right now. Grey cabinets are a fantastic choice because grey is a neutral tone that goes with beige, taupe, cream, brown, black, and white. Neutral colours also complement many other colours, so matte grey is a relevant choice when you want to mix and match a palette with grey as the main attraction.

Consider matte grey cabinets for black or white marble countertops, stainless steel appliances, and just about any floor colour or style. Matte grey is a wonderful option for a muted hue that allows you to brighten your kitchen in other ways

Greige

Greige is a colour between beige and grey. As you can imagine, greige cabinets can go with anything else in the room.

Greige is bright, which makes your kitchen prep-friendly so you can see what you’re doing without extraordinarily bright lights. This is a great huge if you have a large window or two filtering daylight into your space.

Greige works wonders with other earth tones, like green and brown, throughout your kitchen. Think about brown granite countertops, perhaps a green floral pattern for a tiled backsplash or curtains, and maybe some green appliances that add a warm touch to your space.

Blue

Blue hues are an incredibly popular kitchen cabinet colour with a trend that doesn't look like it will slow down and time soon, you can mix shades of blue as an accent colour for underneath the island, above the fridge, or even as part of a two-tone cabinet door.

With a variety of white hues for the  Go for a bluish-green cabinet colour for an earth tone rather than having a deep blue ocean or darker navy blue all over the kitchen.

Blue complements green and brown, so bring out those brown wicker fruit baskets and live plants to complement this kitchen choice.

Red

Red is a trending cabinet colour, but only in respect to base cabinets or underneath an island as opposed to the entire kitchen.

However, red would work as a muted shade, such as a dull salmon or a reddish-pink.

Red is a wonderful contrasting colour to put on an island if you have a white kitchen and you want to draw the eye with a vastly different shade. Red would also contrast with yellow and grey if you’re looking to make something stand out.

White

White continues to be at the top of our list of trending kitchen colours. White goes with any other hue, and you can add just about any splash of colour, whether you want yellow curtains, red countertop appliances, a beautiful patterned backsplash, black marble or granite countertops, brown accents on your cabinet doors, or wallpaper of any shade.

Brown

Brown is a neutral colour that comes in many shades that work with plenty of other neutral tones. You can choose from light brown, dark brown, tan, and even a natural wood colour.

Stain is fantastic for natural wood grains that bring out the beauty of the wood. You have so many choices for stain colours, like walnut, cherry, mahogany, elm, and ash. Stains are compatible with most other colours.

Two Tones

Two-toned kitchens are all the rage now. Think about how this works for cabinets. You can have a base colour for the main cabinet and then a different colour for the door. You could choose a dark brown stain for the main cabinet with a light brown door. Or think about white cabinets with blue accents around the edges or with the handle.

If you have curved accents, you can have one colour of paint along the curved lines that differs from the shade on the main cabinets. Two-toned cabinets can complement or contrast each other.

Green cabinets can have blue or brown accents to complement each other. Or a dark green cabinet can have white accents as a contrasting colour.

Go with your two favourite hues to get creative with a two-tone kitchen!
