IKEA AKURUM Kitchen Discontinued for 10 Years — What do I do?

If you have an IKEA AKURUM kitchen, you already know the story. IKEA discontinued the AKURUM system back in 2015, and door fronts were fully phased out by October of that year. That was over a decade ago.

For a lot of homeowners, that was easy enough to ignore at first. The boxes were solid, the layout worked, and life moved on. But ten years is a long time. Thermofoil peels. Finishes fade. Styles move on. And at some point, every time you walk into your kitchen, you think: this needs to change.

If that's where you are right now, you're not alone, and you have better options than you might think.

Why Can't I Just Get Parts From IKEA?

IKEA stopped manufacturing AKURUM-compatible parts in 2015. Any remaining stock disappeared long ago. Even if your warranty is technically still valid, depending on your original purchase date, IKEA cannot provide the physical replacement doors or drawer fronts you need.

The SEKTION system that replaced AKURUM uses a completely different drilling configuration. SEKTION doors are not compatible with AKURUM boxes. You can't mix and match.

How Do I Know If I Have an AKURUM Kitchen?

Open a cabinet door and look at the interior drilled holes.

A single line of holes means you have an AKURUM system. Four rows of holes mean you have the newer SEKTION system.

If neither description matches, you may have custom-built cabinet boxes that aren't IKEA at all. Swedish Door works with those too.

So What Are My Options?

You could search auction sites and Facebook Marketplace for stray AKURUM doors. Some people find them. But you're relying on the condition, colour match, and how long they'll last before the same problem comes back.

The more reliable option that gets you the kitchen you want is custom replacement doors made specifically for your AKURUM boxes.

This is exactly what Swedish Door does.

The Swedish Door Solution

Your AKURUM cabinet boxes are likely in fine shape. The frame, the structure, the layout, none of that needs to change. What's dated, worn, or just not you anymore is the doors and the finishes. That's what we replace.

We make custom replacement doors and drawer fronts designed to fit your existing AKURUM cabinet boxes. You choose the style, finish, and colour. We build them and ship them directly to you anywhere across Canada and the United States.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

Our painted HDF doors go through an 8-layer painting process for a durable, flawless finish. We offer 21 popular paint colours plus custom colour matching. We also carry EuroOak, EuroMatte, high gloss, thermofoil, and real wood veneer options. Whatever look you have in mind, we can get you there.

Why Not Just Gut the Kitchen?

A full kitchen renovation in Canada runs anywhere from $25,000 to $70,000 or more. A significant chunk of that budget goes toward new cabinet boxes, boxes that, in an AKURUM kitchen that's been well maintained, are structurally perfectly fine.

Replacing just the doors and panels gets you the visual transformation at a fraction of the cost. Installation takes one to two days. And because you're reusing the existing structure, it's the greener choice too.

We've had customers come to us after getting quotes of $50,000 or $60,000 for a full replacement, and we've transformed their kitchens for well under $15,000. Same bones. Completely different look.
